What if we apply Le Corbusier’s 5 principles to modular timber buildings?


Franco Piva, Eng Alessandro Zuanni, Arch Alessandro Bertoletti, Arch CONCEPT LeCorbusier's Unitè d'Habitation was born in a very important historical context in a country devastated by the Second World War. The goal of this building was to respond to the real demand for housing quickly and cheaply. This was possible thanks to the combination of reinforced concrete-prefabrication which allowed to produce modular elements, in series, and therefore quick to assemble. We are deeply convinced that the aspects mentioned above, like prefabrication, modularity, and the ability to respond to the demand for accommodation quickly and economically are deeply current. Today, however, unlike in the past, designers are asked to do it in a green way, that is taking care of the environment. So we decided to reinterpret an iconic architecture like the Unitè d’Habitation (even in a slightly provocative key) with the aim of sending a strong message regarding the use of timber and its multiple potentials as a building material.

Ecological values

“According to many research, there are two ways to decrease C02 in the atmosphere-either by reducing emissions, or by removing C02 and storing it. Wood has the unique ability to do both”. In fact making a comparison between the same module made of timber and concrete, while the first can sequesters up to -0,2 tons of C02, concrete Module emits into the environment up to 283 tons of C02 (comparison made using the same size of the module and considering only the structural elements).
