To describe this Open Source Wood Challenge for EASA 2020 project, a number of significant topics are discussed in its making. Beginning with the challenge of designing a multi-story building concept, the theme of ‘school building’ was chosen from the list of possible project choices. Having focused on the theme of ‘school’, a more in-depth approach was taken in order to design this building as a younger age bracket for children of 4-8 years olds – hence as a kindergarten. Exploring the potential of wood is often something forgotten about when construction stage passes. Looking at ‘wood’ through the eyes of the human beings which will inhabit this building, it starts to become something else which is more or less PLAY. Children are fragile but daring creatures, who not only need cognitive learning but also become environmentally friendly from an early age in order to try and reduce their carbon footprints by the time they become adults. When it comes to wooden play objects made from sustainably sourced, certified wood are a much more environmentally friendly option than plastic or any other material. As an organic, renewable substance, these wooden objects are biodegradable and can be recycled. The use of wood is not only beneficial as a renewable material but also as an object which stimulates the senses of children from vision, sound, scent and touch. The Kerto elements provide for all these aspects especially if given the opportunity to explore its ‘playful’ potential. They provide durability and engagement, longevity and imagination for children. Wooden objects can aid a child’s physical, mental and emotional development - this is a world of play that children and parents can discover together.
