Woodpecker is full size vehicle platform from wood for robotics and automotive hobbyists. Open sourced concept of modular, inexpensive platform was created to foster tinkering, in-home garage development of autonomous technologies for enthusiasts and research organizations. Wooden frame could be made and assembled by everyone using simple woodworking tools and downloadable free drawings or for those looking for professional made kit of pre-produced parts (like IKEA furniture) will be delivered through local IKEA or Home Depot. Woodpecker “skateboard” compact and modular frame in combination with ecological wooden frame creates innovative concept for future development of transportation.

  • The weight of this wooden chassis is probably considerably less than an equivalent metal one. However, the bearings for the axles might need re-enforcement dependent on the loading put on the chassis as an autonomous vehicle. The speed would need to be restricted, because of the more brittle failure of the timber material in case of a collision. However, the idea for using engineered wood products like LVL is very novel.
  • Even though I don't fully get the end-use (I'm not an automotive hobbyist) , the idea of DIY Kit makes sense to reduce costs. Would you have picture of what should support the Woodpecker above the platform?
